The hydroelectric station at Cowans Ford began operation in 1963 and was completed in 1967.  The dam created the largest body of fresh water in North Carolina: Lake Norman. With it's 520 miles of shoreline, Lake Norman North Carolina is truly an "Inland Sea"!
